Machu Picchu was built by the Inca leader Pachacutec who governed the Inca empire. It was built with the aim of being the most beautiful in the Tawantinsuyo (the Inca Empire).

Arqueologists have divided Machu Picchu into three large sectors:

(1) The sacred quarters which includes "Intiwatana", The Sun Temple and the Three Windows Room.

(2) The priests' and nobles' quarters (residential zone)

(3) The commoners' quarters in the southern part of the city. Here the rest of the people lived.

This is the Intiwatana or "place where the sun is bound". This is the central stone of Machu Picchu. It is part of the astronomical measuring system used to determine the dates of the beginning and end of the agricultural cycle.
